Canady's gem helps Stanford reach WCWS semis

NiJaree Canady, a standout pitcher for Stanford University, delivered a remarkable performance in the Women's College World Series (WCWS) regionals against the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) on May 27, 2023. Her exceptional pitching helped propel Stanford into the semifinals of the prestigious tournament.

Canady, a junior from San Jose, California, took the mound for Stanford in the decisive game three of the best-of-three series against UCLA. The stakes were high as both teams were evenly matched, and the winner would advance to face Florida State in the WCWS semifinals.

The game began with UCLA showing determination and securing an early lead with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. However, Canady remained unfazed and settled into a rhythm on the mound. She struck out the side in the bottom of the second inning and allowed only one hit in the third inning.

In the top of the fourth inning, Stanford's offense came alive with three runs, taking the lead for the first time in the game. Canady continued her dominance on the mound, retiring UCLA in order in the fourth and fifth innings.

The sixth inning proved to be pivotal as UCLA threatened with runners on second and third base with only one out. However, Canady displayed her composure and struck out the next two batters to preserve Stanford's lead.

In the top of the seventh inning, Stanford added an insurance run, extending their lead to 4-2. Canady then took the mound for the final frame, determined to close out the game and secure her team's place in the semifinals. She retired UCLA in order, striking out the side for her 13th strikeout of the game.

Canady's impressive performance in the circle earned her the win, improving her record to 25-5 on the season. Her 13 strikeouts in the game set a new single-game record for strikeouts in the NCAA Women's College World Series.

With Canady's outstanding pitching and Stanford's solid offensive support, they emerged victorious and advanced to face Florida State in the semifinals of the WCWS. The team's journey to the championship was far from over, but their confidence was boosted by Canady's dominant performance in the regional finals.
