AFL great Carl Ditterich charged with child sex offences

Carl Ditterich, a former Australian Rules Football (AFL) player and coach, was charged with multiple child sex offenses by Victoria Police in March 2023. The charges stem from an alleged incident that occurred in 1985.

Ditterich, who played for North Melbourne Football Club between 1977 and 1984, is accused of committing sexual acts against a boy under the age of 16 during that time. The alleged victim came forward and reported the incident to authorities, leading to a thorough investigation by Victoria Police.

The charges against Ditterich include indecent assault and sexual penetration of a child under the age of 16. He was arrested and questioned by police before being released on bail. The conditions of his bail include not contacting the complainant or any witnesses and not entering certain areas where children may be present.

Ditterich's legal team has issued a statement denying any wrongdoing and expressing confidence that he will be exonerated once all the facts have come to light. The statement also expressed sympathy for anyone who may have been a victim of sexual abuse and urged anyone with information to come forward.

The AFL and North Melbourne Football Club have both expressed their concern for the welfare of the alleged victim and their support for anyone affected by child sexual abuse. The league and the club have also stated that they will fully cooperate with police in their investigation.

The case is currently before the courts and Ditterich is due to appear in Melbourne Magistrates' Court at a later date to face the charges. The outcome of the case will depend on the evidence presented and the findings of the court.

It is important to note that anyone who has been affected by child sexual abuse can seek help and support from various organizations and services that are available to assist victims and survivors. These include the Child Welfare and Protection Authority, Rape and Domestic Violence Services Australia, and the National Sexual Assault, Domestic Family Violence Counselling Service.

Child sexual abuse is a serious crime that can have long-lasting effects on victims and their families. It is important that anyone who suspects or knows of such incidents comes forward and reports them to the authorities to ensure that justice is served and that victims receive the support they need to heal and move forward.
