Golfer dislocates shoulder before playoff win

Akshay Bhatia, a young American professional golfer, experienced an unexpected setback during the final round of the Valero Texas Open on April 3, 2023. The tournament, held at the TPC San Antonio in San Antonio, Texas, was the last event before the Masters Tournament.

Bhatia, who was making his fifth start as a professional, was tied for the lead with three other players going into the final round. He began the day strong with three birdies in his first six holes. On the par-3 7th hole, he made another impressive birdie putt from just outside 10 feet. As he celebrated the putt with an exuberant fist pump, he suffered an unfortunate injury.

While expressing his excitement and relief after sinking the putt, Bhatia's left arm, which he uses for his dominant left-handed swing, popped out of its socket. The dislocation occurred due to the forceful celebration. Witnesses and fellow players rushed to help him, and medical personnel arrived promptly to assess and treat the injury.

Despite the injury, Bhatia was determined to continue playing. He took a painkiller and received treatment from medical staff to try and manage the pain and swelling. He returned to the course with a sling and played the final 11 holes with a one-armed swing.

Battling through the pain and adversity, Bhatia managed to shoot a 1-under-par 71 to finish the round tied for the lead at 11-under-par 277 with Sung Kang and Scott Stallings. The trio entered a three-way playoff to determine the winner of the tournament.

The playoff took place on the par-4 18th hole, where each player had to attempt to reach the green in regulation and two-putt for the win. Bhatia, with his left arm still in a sling, managed to hit a solid drive and approach shot to set up a two-putt opportunity. Kang and Stallings both missed their chances to secure the victory, leaving Bhatia with a chance to clinch the title.

With grit and determination, Bhatia holed a 12-foot putt to secure his first professional victory and become the first player to win a PGA Tour event with a dislocated shoulder. The crowd erupted in cheers as he raised his one arm in triumph, symbolizing his incredible perseverance and resilience.

Bhatia's victory at the Valero Texas Open earned him an invitation to compete in the Masters Tournament, which took place just a week later at Augusta National Golf Club. He became an inspiration to golf fans and athletes alike with his unwavering determination and unforgettable performance.
