Ziyambi repeats anti-sanctions call

Justice Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi has called for the removal of sanctions against Zimbabwe in order for its citizens to fully enjoy their rights enshrined in the Constitution. He made this statement during the high-level segment of the 55th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) held on September 24, 2021.

Ziyambi argued that sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe by the international community have had a negative impact on the country's economy and people, and have hindered its progress towards achieving sustainable development goals. He also pointed out that the sanctions violate the principles of the UN Charter, which calls for the promotion of peace, security, and cooperation among nations.

The justice minister emphasized that Zimbabwe is committed to upholding the rule of law, respecting human rights, and promoting democracy and good governance. He called on the international community to recognize these efforts and work with Zimbabwe to lift the sanctions, which he said would pave the way for a more prosperous and peaceful future for the country and its people.

It is worth noting that Zimbabwe has been under various forms of economic sanctions since the 1990s, imposed by countries such as the United States, European Union, and Australia. These sanctions have targeted key sectors of the economy, including banking, mining, and agriculture, and have had a significant impact on the country's growth and development.

In recent years, there has been growing debate about the effectiveness and legality of these sanctions, with some arguing that they are no longer necessary or appropriate given Zimbabwe's progress towards democracy and good governance. However, others argue that the sanctions remain necessary to hold the government accountable for human rights abuses and other violations.

Regardless of the ongoing debate, it is clear that the removal of sanctions would have a significant impact on Zimbabwe's economy and people, and could pave the way for a more prosperous and peaceful future for the country.
